Shared-evidence record (SSR-REC-COUNCIL-2026-06-30-Q1, v1.0.0)
An AI answer passed peer review. A claim check caught its calculation error.
An experimental shared-evidence record making individual technical claims traceable to pinned artifacts, testable by a deterministic local calculation, and explicitly correctable with supersession and dependency-revalidation links. This page and its downloadable JSON record (council-claim-record.json) are generated from one canonical source (src/data/council-claim-record.ts).
The Council is a multi-provider verification application that I built with the team (the AI
agents I direct) at thisisntjon/thecouncil (pinned at immutable commit af8643c). It runs 4 sequential review stages across 3 application services (ARCHITECTURE.md) and exports a JSON record of each stage (q1_physics_photon_vs_electron.json).

1. The question, physical assumptions, and distinguished quantities
Recorded question (q1_physics_photon_vs_electron): A photon and a free electron each have a wavelength of 1.0 nm. Which one has more total energy, and roughly by what factor? Show the key steps briefly.
Evaluating the claims in q1_physics_photon_vs_electron.json requires separating photon energy, electron kinetic energy, and electron total energy under
explicit physical assumptions:
- Both particles are in vacuum with wavelength lambda = 1.0 nm = 1.0e-9 m.
- The photon is massless (rest mass m_gamma = 0); its total energy equals its kinetic energy E_gamma = h * c / lambda.
- The electron is a free particle with rest mass m_e = 9.1093837139e-31 kg (CODATA 2022) and de Broglie momentum magnitude p = h / lambda.
- Because p * c = 1239.841984 eV is much smaller than the electron rest energy m_e * c^2 = 510998.950692 eV (p * c / (m_e * c^2) = 0.002426), the non-relativistic kinetic energy formula K_e = p^2 / (2 * m_e) = (p * c)^2 / (2 * m_e * c^2) agrees with the exact relativistic kinetic energy to within 3.6e-6 eV.
- Electron total relativistic energy E_e_total = sqrt((p * c)^2 + (m_e * c^2)^2) = m_e * c^2 + K_e_rel includes the rest energy m_e * c^2.

Photon energy (total = kinetic) (E_gamma)
| E_gamma = (h * c) / lambda | 1239.841984 eV (1.239842 keV)

| 1.50 eV (about 1.5 eV; 1.504501 eV with rounded 1240 eV and 511 keV) |
Electron kinetic energy (exact relativistic) (K_e_rel)
| K_e_rel = sqrt((p * c)^2 + (m_e * c^2)^2) - m_e * c^2 | 1.504118 eV (0.001504118 keV)
| 1.504118 eV (differs from non-relativistic by 3.6e-6 eV) |
Electron rest energy (E_e_rest)
| E_e_rest = m_e * c^2 | 510998.950692 eV (510.998951 keV)
| 511 keV (511,000 eV) |
Electron total relativistic energy (E_e_total)

| 511 keV (511.000 keV) |
2. The original intermediate claim (explicitly refuted)
Recorded text in Round 1 (gpt): If the question were about kinetic energy instead of total energy, the photon and electron would be roughly equal here (~1.24 keV each), so the conclusion depends critically on "total energy."

1.24 keV (approximately 1240 eV)(units:keV) - Formula misapplied
E = h * c / lambda (massless photon energy formula misapplied to a massive electron)- Why it is incorrect
- A 1.0 nm electron has momentum p = h / lambda and momentum-energy product p * c = 1239.84 eV, which equals the photon energy. Because the electron has rest mass m_e * c^2 = 510,998.95 eV, its kinetic energy is K_e = (p * c)^2 / (2 * m_e * c^2) = 1.504 eV, not p * c = 1.24 keV.

- Current cross-check method
- Deterministic Python 3 standard-library calculation performed on 2026-10-26 using 2019 SI exact constants (h, c, e) and CODATA 2022 electron mass (m_e), confirming K_e = 1.504121 eV (non-relativistic) and 1.504118 eV (relativistic), which is 824.3 times smaller than 1.24 keV.

6. What changed, what did not, and what this demonstration cannot establish
What changed
- Claim SSR-CLM-COUNCIL-2026-06-30-Q1-EKE-V1 (upstream ID gpt-7, stating electron kinetic energy at 1.0 nm is ~1.24 keV) is explicitly marked refuted and superseded by SSR-CLM-COUNCIL-2026-06-30-Q1-EKE-V2 (1.504121 eV non-relativistic / 1.504118 eV exact relativistic, or ~1.5 eV).
- This verification page now publishes a single canonical claim record in HTML (/evidence/council/) and JSON (/evidence/council-claim-record.json) alongside a deterministic Python 3 standard-library numerical cross-check performed on 2026-10-26.
What did not change
- The downstream total-energy conclusion (SSR-CLM-COUNCIL-2026-06-30-Q1-ETOT-V1: electron total energy ~511 keV exceeds photon energy ~1.24 keV by a factor of ~412) was flagged for revalidation when its kinetic-energy dependency changed and remained valid after revalidation because rest mass (510.999 keV) dominates.
- The pinned upstream artifact q1_physics_photon_vs_electron.json at commit af8643c6497fb10f83aca314da10fdea04e349bb is preserved unchanged.
Five required historical and methodological limits
-
The overall total-energy conclusion did not change (
LIM-1-TOTAL-ENERGY-UNCHANGED): All four Round 1 model answers (gpt, claude, grok, gemini) and the Stage 4 synthesis reached the same overall conclusion: the 1.0 nm electron has ~412 times more total energy (~511 keV vs. ~1.24 keV). Catching gpt-7 corrected an intermediate kinetic-energy caveat, not the headline answer. -
Three of four initial model answers already contained the correct ~1.5 eV value (
LIM-2-INITIAL-ANSWERS-HAD-CORRECT-VALUE): In Round 1, claude (claim claude-8: 1.50 eV), grok (claim grok-6: 1.505 eV), and gemini (claim gemini-4: 1.50 eV) already derived the correct non-relativistic electron kinetic energy before peer critique or Stage 3 claim verification ran. Only gpt introduced the 1.24 keV kinetic-energy error. -
The recorded Stage 3 verifier used model reasoning, not an executed independent numerical test (
LIM-3-MODEL-REASONING-NOT-EXECUTED-CODE): In commit af8643c, claim gpt-7 (category: "logical_deduction") was routed by isReasoningClaim in lib/claims.mjs to investigateByReasoning in shadow-council/index.js, which prompted another language model (gemini) to re-derive the math in prose (source: { title: "Independent reasoning re-derivation", url: null }). It did not execute Python or an external calculator. In the same Stage 3 run, model reasoning also produced noisy verdicts on nearby claims: gemini-8 ("1240 eV / 1.50 eV ≈ 824") was marked refuted because 1240 / 1.50 = 826.67 even though unrounded constants give 824.30; grok-7 was marked partially_supported (0.6) due to sentence isolation; gpt-8 was marked partially_supported (0.3) with "Reasoning verifier unparseable; provisionally partial."; and non-reasoning claims included provider search-grounding URLs despite the run README stating "web search off." -
The offline synthetic fixture is distinct from the recorded provider run (
LIM-4-OFFLINE-FIXTURE-DISTINCT): Running npm run demo:fixture executes demo_fixture.mjs on a canned software-architecture prompt with zero API keys to demonstrate pipeline mechanics. It does not replay or re-verify the June 30, 2026 physics provider capture (q1_physics_photon_vs_electron.json). -
This example does not establish that verification caused an accuracy improvement (
LIM-5-NO-CAUSAL-ACCURACY-PROOF): Because three of the four initial answers already contained ~1.5 eV and the Stage 4 synthesizer saw all four Round 1 answers alongside Stage 3 verdicts, this single recorded run cannot isolate whether Stage 3 caused the final synthesis to report ~1.5 eV, nor does it establish a benchmark accuracy or safety gain. Model agreement across providers is not independent corroboration. This public worked example is kept separate from any future held-out evaluation of reliability. -
Provider fallback when 1 key is configured: cross-provider verification requires 2 or more configured provider keys; when only 1 provider key is configured, the verifier falls back to that provider (
docs/mode-matrix.md,shadow-council/index.js).
